SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team split a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader with Briar Cliff University Thursday afternoon in Sioux City, Iowa. With the split, the Tigers improve to 14-24 overall and 3-3 in the GPAC.
In the first game of the day Thursday, Dakota Wesleyan scored three runs in the seventh inning but lost 6-5, and in the nightcap the Tigers pulled out a 2-1 win thanks to a pitching gem by Ethan Opsahl.
In the first game, the Chargers scored two runs in the first inning on a DWU error and an RBI single. The Tigers got within one in the second on an RBI single by Toby Kaplan, but Briar Cliff made it 3-1 in the bottom of the inning when it scored on an RBI single. The Chargers added two more runs on a two-run single in the third before the Tigers scored again, this time on an RBI sac fly by Jon Holsworth.
BCU had an answer again in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single to go up 6-2, which is where the score would stay until the seventh inning. Holsworth singled to start the inning, but the next two batters flied out. Erik Nockleby singled and Chris Ciatti hit a three-run homer to make it a one-run game, but that's all the runs DWU could muster.
Nick Tadlock had two of the Tigers' nine hits and Ciatti had three RBIs. Nick Anglin threw the first 3.1 innings and took the loss. He gave up six runs on nine hits with one strikeout. Josh Wagner struck out two in 1.2 innings of work and Chris Housley also saw time on the mound.
In the second game of the day Briar Cliff once again got on the board first with an unearned run in the first inning, but was held scoreless the rest of the game. Dakota Wesleyan tied the game in the fourth on a solo homer by Tadlock, and the Chargers left the bases loaded in the seventh in an attempt to end the game in seven innings, but DWU's defense held strong. The Tigers scored the eventual winning run in the eighth on an RBI single by Tadlock.
Kirk McBreen and Tadlock both had two hits for DWU, which had seven total hits. Tadlock had the team's two RBIs. Opsahl threw all eight innings and earned the win. He gave up one run on five hits and struck out 15 batters.
DWU is back at home Saturday, April 7, when it hosts Morningside College at 1 p.m.
