ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team picked up a key Great Plains Athletic Conference split Friday night when split a doubleheader with Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa.
The Tigers took the first game to eight innings – and had a chance to win the game in the eighth – but lost 2-1. DWU answered with a -2 victory in the second game. The Tigers are now 15-27 overall and 4-6 in the GPAC.
In the first game, Dakota Wesleyan scored first in the top of the fourth when Anthony Pakutka – who was running for Chris Ciatti – scored on a bunt by Michael Lukkason. The Tigers had the opportunity to score more with bases loaded, but the final two batters got out to end the inning. The Red Raiders tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a sac fly, and the game stayed knotted at one at the end of seven innings.
Kirk McBreen reached on an error to start the eighth inning and Maximum Shower reached on a fielder's choice and both advanced on an error by the pitcher to put runners on second and third with no outs. But McBreen was caught stealing, Erik Nockleby struck out and Ciatti grounded out to end the threat. Northwestern won the game on an RBI single in the bottom of the inning.
DWU had just three hits to Northwestern's eight in the first game. Ciatti, Nick Tadlock and Jon Holsworth each had a hit. Chris Housley threw the first four innings and gave up one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Josh Wagner threw two scoreless innings, and Nick Pecha gave up one run and three hits in the final 1.2 innings.
In the second game it was the Red Raiders who scored first on an RBI groundout in the second inning, but the Tigers scored all the runs they would need in the third. Holsworth was hit by a pitch, Toby Kaplan singled and Shower walked to load the bases. McBreen had an RBI walk, Nockleby reached on an RBI fielder's choice and Shower scored an unearned run on a throwing error by the shortstop. DWU added another run in the fourth on a sac fly by Sam Schumacher and ended the scoring in the fifth with an unearned run by Kaplan after a Northwestern error.
The Tigers gave up a single run in the sixth on an RBI single, but held on for the win.
DWU had five hits and the Red Raiders had six in the nightcap. Ciatti and Kaplan each had two hits and Nockleby had one. Ethan Opsahl threw all seven innings and gave up two runs – one earned – on six hits with four strikeouts.
The Tigers are scheduled to be back at home Sunday, April 15, to host Midland University starting at 1 p.m. at Drake Field. Be sure and check the DWU athletics website, www.dwuathletics.com, for any weather-related postponements or cancelations.
