MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team added a solid arm to its pitching staff Wednesday afternoon when Luke Schultz signed with the Tigers. Schultz is head coach Steve Gust's sixth recruit for 2013 and is one of the top recruits so far for DWU.
Schultz comes to Dakota Wesleyan from West Salem High School in West Salem, Wis. He earned four varsity letters in baseball and helped his team to a 55-11 record over the past two seasons. The 6-foot-2 right-handed pitcher is a two-time all-conference, all-district and all-state selection.
Schultz, who is listed as one of the top pitching prospects in the state of Wisconsin for 2012, throws around 83 mph consistently and has a variety of pitches that he is comfortable with. He has helped the Panthers to the Wisconsin summer baseball state tournament each of the past two seasons, and played on the Wisconsin All-Stars 2011 Fall National Team and was named player-of-the-year.
Along with baseball, Schultz also lettered three times in basketball and twice in football. He was named to the honor roll three times, and plans to major in athletic training at Dakota Wesleyan.
"We are extremely excited to sign Luke," Gust said. "He has all the qualities that we look for in a recruit: he's big, athletic, passionate about the game, works hard and places an importance on education. We feel he can make an immediate impact, as right now he is one of the top pitchers in the entire state of Wisconsin."
Schultz is the third pitcher to sign with the Tigers for 2013. He joins left-handed pitchers Nate Everett (Papillion, Neb.) and Jerrett Mills (Norfolk, Neb.) as well as outfielder Alex McGuigan (Pierre, S.D.), infielder Andrew Becker (Tea, S.D.) and first/third baseman Jake Capko (Corvallis, Mont.). The Tigers are scheduled to start the 2012 season Friday, Feb. 17, when they take on Dickinson State University at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.
