Christensen signs Beresford’s VanGelder to class of 2016
MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball team opened the 2015-16 season with an impressive win over Oglala Lakota College on Tuesday, but head coach Jason Christensen is also preparing for the future with the third signing of the class of 2016.
MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball team opened the 2015-16 season with an impressive win over Oglala Lakota College on Tuesday, but head coach Jason Christensen is also preparing for the future with the third signing of the class of 2016.
Beresford, S.D., native Holly VanGelder signed a national letter of intent to play for DWU next year, Christensen announced Wednesday.
"Holly will be a nice addition to our family," Christensen said. "She is a very physical player and will add depth to our roster next year. I am excited for Holly to be a part of our program."
VanGelder, a 5-foot-8 guard, scored 7.7 points per game for Beresford last season, while pulling down 5.86 rebounds per game to go along with 47 assists and 40 steals. She helped lead the Watchdogs to a 12-10 record last season, leading the team in assists.
In five years playing basketball for the Watchdogs, VanGelder has earned three varsity letters and been a started for the last two seasons. She has also lettered six times in cross country and five times in track and field, qualifying for the state meet in the discus.
In the classroom, VanGelder has been on the Merit Roll the last three years and is on the National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Todd and Ranee VanGelder and plans to major in sports management at DWU.
