Karst Joins Impressive DWU Recruiting Class of 2016
MITCHELL, S.D. – With all the momentum in the world on the court, Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball coach Jason Christensen continues to build a strong foundation for the future with another big signing, adding to an already impressive class of 2016.
MITCHELL, S.D. – With all the momentum in the world on the court, Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball coach Jason Christensen continues to build a strong foundation for the future with another big signing, adding to an already impressive class of 2016.
Makaela Karst, a Plankinton, S.D., native, recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball for the Tigers in 2016-17, Christensen announced Monday. Karst is the fourth member of the class of 2016, which is shaping up to be one of the best in recent memory for DWU.
"We are excited to bring Makaela in to the fold at DWU," Christensen said. "She is a proven winner with success on the basketball and volleyball court throughout her career. Her size and versatility will allow Makaela to play a number of positions and roles for us in the future."
The 6-foot guard has earned five varsity letters in her high school career and has been part of numerous successful state runs by the Titans. In her sophomore season the Titans finished fifth at the State 'A' Tournament and as a junior they finished third. In her junior season the Titans finished with a record of 22-3. Karst has earned All-Tournament team honors, SESD and CBH All-Conference honors and Second Team All-State. She is averaging 14 points, six rebounds and four assists per game heading into her senior season.
In addition to basketball, Karst has played a vital role in the volleyball success of the Titans, as the team placed fourth at the State 'A' Tournament in her junior season and had a runner-up finish in her final season. Karst was named to the All-Tournament Team and earned Second Team All-State. She finished her senior season with 288 kills and 39 aces. Karst also won the back-to-back Daily Republic Volleyball Player-of-the-Year honors. In addition to her basketball and volleyball success, she is also a strong golfer.
Karst has shown her ability to succeed in the classroom, as she is part of the National Honor Society, Academic All-State and the Honor Roll. She is the daughter of Todd and Michelle Karst.
