The Tigers stepped out of Great Plains Athletic Conference play for an exhibition game against NCAA Division II opponent Northern State University Tuesday in Aberdeen, S.D., and the Tigers gave the Wolves all they could handle.
The game was close throughout the first half, but NSU started to pull away in the third quarter, building a 15-point lead late in the frame. DWU fought back, pulling to within four points with two minutes to play, but the Wolves held on for the 72-64 win. The loss does not impact DWU's overall record.
The Tigers were led by junior forward Erica Herrold (Dimock, S.D.) with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting. She added five rebounds in the loss. Two-time reigning GPAC Player of the Week Kristin Sabers (Mitchell, S.D.) continued her strong play with 15 points and five assists for DWU. Freshman Rylie Osthus hit some big shots down the stretch to pull DWU close. The De Smet, S.D., native finished with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
DWU shot 25-of-55 from the field and 8-of-24 from deep, while getting outrebounded 41-27.
The Tigers return to GPAC play against Midland University at 2 p.m. Saturday in Fremont, Neb.
