MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team found themselves in a five-set thriller against the Presentation College Saints. After taking the first two sets, DWU dropped the final three as they fell to Presentation Tuesday at the Christen Family Athletic Center in Mitchell.
Set scores were: 25-20, 26-24, 15-25, 24-26 and 9-15 in favor of the Saints.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair as the Tigers (14-12) pulled away late thanks to an Emily Brunsing (Wagner, S.D.) kill. The second set saw the Saints (14-8) take an early lead. However, Sara Herman (Reliance, S.D.) gave DWU their first lead of the second set after a service ace. Neither team led by more than two points throughout the set, but that was all DWU needed as an error by the Saints gave the Tigers the second-set victory.
Presentation got off to a hot start and never trailed as they took the third set. During the fourth set, Sydney Fritz (Winner, S.D.) gave the Tigers the lead after two straight kills. The Saints offense proved to be too powerful as they defeated DWU down the stretch.
Bridgett Knobbe (Norfolk, Neb.) recorded a double-double with 45 assists and 29 digs, while Rebecca Frick (Yankton, S.D.) tallied a double-double with 19 kills and 18 digs. Herman added 35 digs, while Chelsey Heeg (Freeman, S.D.) tallied 16 kills and four digs. Mallory Cooper (Orchard, Neb.) and Darby Duncan (Mellette, S.D.) pitched in 18 and 11 digs, respectively.
The Tigers return to Great Plains Athletic Conference action against Briar Cliff University at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in Sioux City, Iowa.
